Always painting as a boy, it was natural for Julian to follow his deep interest in art. He studied graphic design for four years and for some time earned a living in graphics, but he finally realised that he loved painting far more and this became his career. Julian paints in oils and concentrates on landscape and figurative subjects, usually set in local surroundings, often gardens. Also, a proportion of his present work comprises studies of wildlife. He almost always tries to give a sense of a painting being part of a scene or a story, as if there has been a build-up to the moment depicted and there will be a continuation. He uses a generous impasto application of paint because of the rich, sumptuous quality that this can convey, even within the brushmarks themselves.
